Tectosonic Renderer
Installation, 2026
Tectosonic Renderer is an apparatus that attempts to see and hear the ground as something alive. Connected to seismic sensors in Kochi, Japan, an area threatened by the predicted Nankai Trough earthquake and tsunami, it receives real-time seismic data and translates normally imperceptible ground movements into sound.
The work uses an existing scientific infrastructure that continuously records the movement of the Earth. Geological motion becomes data, travels across distance, and is rendered into a new sensory form, allowing an audience elsewhere to encounter the movement of a particular landscape in real time.
Rooted in animist understandings of humans as entangled with a living environment, the work reframes the ground not as a static foundation but as something continuously moving and changing.
